WHO ARE WE?
WhoDunnit Events is an award-winning, international company which specialises in creating unique interactive events, commonly murder mysteries. We are experts at creating mental puzzles for brains of all ages. Our events have been presented publicly at numerous festivals to great acclaim. We also make fully customised "bespoke" experiences for private and corporate clients.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Founded in 2003 as the production name for Vanessa B Baylen, from the start WhoDunnit Events was about creating highly involving art-ertainment experiences that audiences could immerse themselves in. Originally called “IMMI HQ” (a mouthful which stood for interactive murder mystery installation headquarters), Vanessa’s debut event was an art installation inspired by Graeme Base’s “The Eleventh Hour”. “Evidence” was quickly followed by a highly interactive theatre experience, “Ambition” (sold out season), and together with hybrid-event, “House”, formed the foundations of all that was to follow.
To date, Vanessa’s best-known event is “Death By Chocolate: an interactive murder mystery with chocolate tasting” which has been presented 6 times across 4 cities in 3 countries. At the world premier, “Death By Chocolate” completely sold out its season and won the Best Special Event Award (Melbourne Fringe Festival 2007). The event went onto an extended sold out season and winning a BankSA Support Act Award (Adelaide Fringe Festival 2008), and then to the world’s largest arts festival (Edinburgh Festival Fringe) where it enjoyed an unheard-of debut sold out season one month in advance (2008). Since, the production has been presented as a bespoke private event for Pricewaterhouse Coopers (2008), sold out performances in Wellington, New Zealand (2009), and acceptance into the curated Melbourne Food & Wine Festival (2010) with yet another sold out season.
Vanessa has also enjoyed the challenge of writing bespoke events to suit a clients’ brief; details of these events sit alongside her public titles on the Event [link] page.
After 2010, Vanessa expanded from the murder mystery genre into other areas. In 2011 she presented a 28 day, 24/7 real-life treasure hunt (BankSA Support Act Award winner, 2008 Adelaide Fringe Festival), and in 2013 she received government funding to present an interactive puzzle adventure game about spies (Barrie, Canada).
You will have to ask her to find out what’s next...
Once described in an interview as a "one woman empire", Vanessa is the creator of every complex, twisting, and rich narrative in WhoDunnit Events' repetoire. She is the producer behind each production, and the creative guide of all content output.
In addition to being the founder and creative director of WhoDunnit Events, she has long been immersed in creative arts. From her first writing competition entry at age 10, to directing and producing a musical on her front porch at age 12, through a Bachelor of Creative Arts at the University of Melbourne, to selling out her first production at the world's largest arts festival -- this is what Vanessa lives for.
A self-proclaimed 'Canalian' (Canadian/Australian), Vanessa has an overly active imagination, a passion for problem solving, and a restless, ambitious nature. She works in as many arts roles as she can, across any artform, and is gifted at multi-tasking. She's a perfectionist, too.
